In the Spring of 2023, Gorey Musical Society proudly presented West Side Story. It was an incredible musical production performed by a talented cast.

The tragic story of Tony and Maria was inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. West Side Story is set in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York in the mid-1950s.

The story explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The Sharks, are recent migrants from Puerto Rico. The Jets vie for dominance of the neighbourhood, and the police try to keep order.

The young protagonist, Tony, is a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang’s leader, Riff. Tony falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.

West Side Story received recognition in numerous categories including Best Overall Show, Best Director, Best Choreography, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role. A true testament to the hard-working cast.

And let us not forget the crowning achievement of winning Best Overall Show 2023 for the entire country of Ireland. This accolade is a true testament to the outstanding quality and impact of the production. Gorey Musical Society has not only demonstrated its own excellence but has also brought pride to the local community and showcased the immense talent within it.
